Only Water Around {Open}

The cat breathed a sigh as he emerged from the darkness - he never did like the tunnels. But now he was in fresh air, and the pond of water greeted him. Teasing little waves lapped at its edges, begging him to come closer and drink. It was a hot day, and he was thirsty. His tail swished, and his long fur flowed as he turned his head to look around - perhaps to see if any other cat would like to join him. Then he stepped forward, his toes slightly wet from the little waves, and dipped his head. His tongue touched the water, cool and refreshing, and he eagerly drank his fill. Then he raised his head, looking out over the land that they had to call home. He was Hawkfire of the Forgotten.

With a mouse dangling from her jaws Cottonmouth made her way back to camp. As she drew closer to the pond she scented another of her clan mates in the area. Curious she moved closer to see who it was, debating whether or not she would stop and chat, or continue on her way. As soon as she was close enough to see anything that was alive in the water she spotted Hawkfire standing still, ripples in the water moving past his paws.

Hawkfire turned as a new scent blew to him on the breeze. For an instant, he was alert, frozen, ready to attack. But the scent told him it was only another clan-mate, Cottonmouth, to be exact. Lifting his head from the clear water, he turned to face the she-cat. Beads of water fell from his mouth, and he quickly licked them up. "Hello Cottonmouth," He greeted the she-cat politely. "I didn't notice you there."

Cottonmouth realized that she had stayed to long and the choice had been made for her, she would stay and chat. She waited patiently as Hawkfire prepared to speak, once he was done she considered just nodding her head, but figured it would be better if she spoke. Gently laying the mouse down on the ground she opened her mouth to speak. "Hello Hawkfire, I hope I didn't disturb you."

He shrugged in reply, saying: "No, you didn't disturb me, but thank you for asking. I was just getting a drink of water." His voice was calm and he flicked his tail. "I see you caught something." He added, nodding towards the mouse on the ground. He swished his tail low to the ground while he waited for the she-cat's reply.

"Not much though, but hopefully it will fill some empty bellies" she didn't mention how it didn't take much to fill one because like all cats a part of The Forgotten she knew that years of hunger had caused most cats stomachs to shrink. She almost feared that they would turn to nothing, but doubted it could happen. At least she was able to fight back against then hunger by hunting.

The tom grimly nodded in agreement, thinking along the same thoughts as the she-cat. "Yes, I hope so. The.. Forgotten includes so many cats - we are hunting our prey to extinction. I fear we might starve," He voiced his worries to the she-cat, knowing she would probably understand. Hunger and food was almost constantly on every cat's mind.

"Well let us hope that it doesn't happen," what the tom said was true, some day in the near or far future the food would run out, unless something were to change. How long could they go on like this. Living in the past happenings and letting it ruin there chance for a brighter future. "Maybe then we will finally leave this dreaded place to somewhere better."

Hawkfire shrugged, liking the she-cat's optimism. "Yes, perhaps. I'm sorry to dwell upon such a dreary topic. Let's talk about something happier." He flicked his tail, looking around the landscape before returning his attention to Cottonmouth.

"I agree," but what they could talk about she didn't know. They spent there lives trying to stay alive all the time that they didn't always have time to think of happy things. Sure there was the occasional thing, but never anything that was so exciting that it blew their worries away.

Hawkfire was stuck on what to talk about as well. He felt he should suggest something - after all, it had been his idea to change the subject. But to change the subject to what? There were no new kits, and all that usually ran through his mind was to find food and somehow survive. "Um... How's your day so far?" Ok. He was getting desperate.

Cottonmouth could tell by the look on his face that he was having a hard time thinking of what to say. She was just about to come up with an idea herself when he spoke. How was her day so far? That was a good question. Usually it was the same as everyday, get up, hunt, bath, possibly eat and sleep. She never usually considered how her day actually was. "It's good I guess, yours?"

He shrugged, shoulders rising than falling. "I don't know. Same as usual. Uh.. which is good I guess..." This conversation wasn't going too well. "Um.. how often do you go out to hunt? Like, are you always out on patrol?"

"To be honest, pretty much" she admitted. "The clan can always do with more food and theres generally nothing else to do. IT helps to keep up my energy and distract my mind." But for a fact Cottonmouth knew that the later didn't always happen, sometimes it ended up bringing more focus on the things she didn't want to think about. "And you? Do you spend you all your time playing in the water." She meant it as a joke and hoped he didn't feel insulted.

He smiled, understanding the joke and not being insulted by it. "Only when I'm thirsty," He replied jokingly. "I hunt a lot too, mostly for the same reasons as yours. It helps distract me from... the problems... and, if I'm lucky, earns us some food." His tail flicked and he looked around, then turned his attention back to the she-cat.
