a new day, another empty belly « Thread Started on Sept 1, 2009, 9:33am »
As soon as you catch the scent you know its only the beginning. Once you find the source you must crouch low and approach your target, slowly ever so slowly you get closer and till theres nothing left to do but leap leaving your prey stunned. And with the raise of your paw you give the killing blow.
Imagining a kill is easy, you always imagine the perfect chase and catch, like if you lived where the clans did, but here it was different. You may scent your prey, but here they won't wait for you to attack, they run. Leading you into a full blown chase, a race against the clock, or the nearest hiding spot for a small animal. You may be bigger and thus faster, but you also have to be smart. If you want to catch your prey you must think and know there plan before the even do, even if it means scanning the area before chasing. Only when you know these things can you hope to catch your prey.
Being one step ahead of others was one of Cottonmouths many motto's. With this in mind she had become one of the best if not the best hunter in the clan. Although she never had been offered the job as head hunter, not that she would except it if she had. She would prefer to hunt then to tell others where to hunt, she knew her skills were better out in the field instead of the camp.
She also knew that if she didn't want to go back to camp empty handed she had better start hunting. Raising her nose high, she breathed in deeply, not because she was out of breath, but was looking for something that was. Within moments she caught scent of a mouse in the distance. She wished it had been something bigger, like a rabbit, something that could feed more then one or two cats, but she knew wishes didn't come true, not any more.
Getting down wind she approached the mouse who still had not noticed her, she hoped it would stay that way. When she went for the attack the mouse was gone. Fox dung she thought, but she wasn't going to let it get away that easy. Within seconds she was feet away from her landing space, and only a few more from her catch. In the distance she could see a tree with a hole in the bottom and knew that if she wanted to catch the mouse she would have to do it quickly. Picking up speed she reached the mouse just before it could get to the tree. Landing the killing blow she picked it up and headed back the way she came.
